Kristina Lugn, 1948-2020
Kristina Lugn, member of the Swedish Academy, has passed away. In 2006 she succeeded the author and professor Lars Gyllensten to Chair number 14. Kristina Lugn found a unique position within Swedish literature by writing poems and plays that refused to follow any given rules or preconceptions. Both as a writer and as a person she moved on a commonplace surface intersected by fault cracks created by passing catastrophes. Reality was not enough for her pitch black cheerfulness and daring levity. She was a genius on the loose and had a clown’s ability to turn every day concepts on their heads – showing the existential depths beneath them.
Kristina Lugn was an outstanding reader. In the Swedish Academy she was a member of both the Nobel Committee and the Committee for New Literature. She saw the Academy as her most important community and worked devotedly for it. She was a person that cared very little about formalities but all the more about presence. Her contributions to the Academy were inestimable and she, who did not resemble anyone else on Earth, will be deeply missed.
