The Swedish Academy elects two new members

The Swedish Academy has voted to appoint as new members author and journalist Ingrid Carlberg, who succeeds Göran Malmqvist on Chair No. 5, and author, critic and translator Steve Sem-Sandberg, who succeeds Kristina Lugn on Chair No. 14.

Ingrid Carlberg was born in 1961 and has worked as a journalist for Sweden’s major daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, and as Guest Professor in journalism at the University of Gothenburg. She has also been appointed Honorary Doctor of Medicine at Uppsala University. Her published books include Pillret. En berättelse om depressioner och doktorer, forskare och Freud, människor och marknader (2008), Raoul Wallenberg: The Heroic Life and Mysterious Disappearance of the Man who Saved Thousands of Jews from the Holocaust (2012, in English: 2015) and Nobel. Den gåtfulle Alfred, hans värld och hans pris (2019).

Steve Sem-Sandberg was born in 1958. He was attached for many years to the national daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, and contributes criticism to another national daily, Dagens Nyheter. He has translated works by John Berger, Thomas Hylland Eriksen, Jon Fosse and Edwin Muir among others. His own recent books include The Emperor of Lies (2009, in English: 2011), The Chosen Ones (2014, in English: 2016), The Tempest (2016, in English: 2019), W. (2019) and Jägarna i Armentières (2020).

The two new members will be formally inducted at the Academy’s annual Ceremonial Meeting on 20 December.
